Open access definitions that might help you when reading publisher and funder policies:

  • Pre-print
    • Also known as the original or submitted manuscript
    • This is the version of the paper written by the author(s) but does not have any of the changes from peer review
  • Post-print
    • Also known as the accepted manuscript
    • This is the version of the paper that contains the changes from the journal's peer review process
  • Version of record
    • This version contains the changes from the peer review process
    • It also has the publisher's formatting (it is the final published paper)
