Finding Conference Proceedings: Deciphering Citations

Demystifying how to find conference proceeding using tools to help you search successfully and understand why conference proceedings are so hard to find.

Introduction

It is important to understand the elements presented in a citation. This will allow you to break down your search into manageable and repeatable steps.

Deciphering a Simple Citation

The Citation:

Advances in optoelectronic metrology: From milliscale to nanoscale applications. Pryputniewicz, Ryszard J. SEM Annual Conference and Exposition on Experimental and Applied Mechanics 2006, Jun 4-7 2006, Saint Louis, MO, United States. Proceedings of the 2006 SEM Annual Conference and Exposition on Experimental and Applied Mechanics 2006, v 1, p 18-34. Society for Experimental Mechanics Inc., 2006.

Deciphering the Citation:

This is a fairly straightforward citation, even though it is quite lengthy.  It contains all the pertinent information that is needed in order to search for the paper.  However, make sure to notice that there is a Conference Name, Title of the Proceedings, as well as a Paper Name presented.  When searching for a proceeding in a library catalogue, use keywords from the proceeding title to determine if the library has a copy. When searching within a database, you will most often want to use the name of the paper. However, be aware that in some databases you may also need to search by proceeding title.

Deciphering a Complex Citation

The Citation:

Filss, M.F., Hummel, L., Effects of Low Energy Beta Emissions on the Measurement Technique and Exposition.  Proc 8th Int Conf Radioact Waste Manage Envir Remed, Bruges, Belgium, Sep 30-Oct 4, 2001, ICEM’01. Sponsored by ASME. ASME, 2002. VOL 3, pp. 1805-1812.  ISBN: 0791835901. Taboas, R.; Vanbrabant, R.; Benda, G. (editors)

Deciphering the Citation:

Be careful! This citation is short but it is jam packed with information.  The most notable is the authorship: there are personal authors, editors and publishers all listed.  These elements are often all considered "authors" when searching within databases.

Also note the abbreviations.  Are you sure you know what they mean?  Does Remed = remedies or remediation?  Is the word "and" between the words "Management" and "Environmental"?  Sometimes a simple Google search can help clarify these abbreviation issues.

One last point to note is the difference between the conference name and the proceedings title.  Knowing that there is a difference will help you to recognize when you have found what you are looking for.
