Side - by - Side Comparisons

Get the Most out of ARTstor's Viewing and Analysis Tools


Images can be viewed in

  • Small thumbnail
  • Large thumbnail
  • Full record with metadata
  • Image viewer
    • includes the analysis tools 
      • panning
      • zooming
      • rotation

Viewing Images Side-by-Side Allows for Comparisons

Instructions on how to open two images side-by-side.  Some possibilities for comparisons of the two images are demonstrated.


Double click a thumbnail image to open it.

Double click on the second thumbnail image that is to be compared with the first.

Return to the thumbnail display, right click, and select "Bring image viewers to front".

Right click on the selected image and select "Bring Image Viewer to the Front".

Use all of the image viewer tools that we explored in the previous section for side-by-side comparisons.

Small Thumbnail Display

The Small Thumbnails is the preferred display for scanning a larger number of results. Each result record includes:

  • a small image
  • a truncated version of the metadata

 Records can be sorted by

  • title
  • creator
  • date

The arrow keys will move you through each page of 24 images. Icons indicate options to refine results with the advanced search, open an image group, or change the display to large thumbnails.

This toolbar is also available in the large thumbnail display.

Large thumbnail Display

The Large Thumbnail display provides the basic metadata: 

  • creator
  • title
  • date of creation
  • owning repository
  • ARTstor's accession number
  • the work's material type
  • measurements.

 

Full Record

Click on the View Full Record link to see all of the metadata.

The additional fields visible in the full record include

  • Culture
  • Period
  • Description
  • Credit Line
  • Image Copyright Notice
  • ARTstor Collection
  • Source

The specifics of the metadata are obtained from the source. ARTstor does not rely on a controlled vocabulary.

The second tab in the metadata full record provides information about the properties of the file:

  • size
  • access rights
  • image URL

If you are logged in to your ARTstor account, additional tabs will appear on the metadata full record.

  • The Personal Notes tab allows you to record your notes about the image.
  • Users with instructor privileges will have an Instructor's Notes tab for entering notes to share with students.

 

Use Image Viewer Tools to Manipulate the Image and get a Customized View

Double click the thumbnail image to launch the image viewer.

Note the series of button in the lower right of the screen.

  • Plus sign to enlarge
  • Minus to reduce
  • Square to revert to original view
  • Zoom button is the default.
  • Pan mode moves the focal point to allow 
    • alllows pan while in enlarged view
  • Rotate the image
  •  Print
  • Download
  • Save to a group (must be logged in).

 

 You can also show the metadata alongside the image, or maximize.
