Why cite?

It is extremely important to cite ALL references to uphold academic integrity and avoid plagiarism. The University of Waterloo has provided the following resources for your information:

refworks logoRefworks allows users to create their own personal citation database easily and quickly by importing references from text files or online databases. Users can then can use these references in writing their papers and automatically format the bibliography.

Citation style guides

A style guide describes a specific format for citing material, to which you referred in your work.  Be sure to check with your instructor for the preferred style for your assignments.

APA Style (American Psychological Association) is a commonly used style in the social sciences.  Borrow the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association or use one of the online help guides below.

Steps for importing references from PubMed into Refworks

Create a collection of all the articles you wish to import to Refworks using the Send To: Clipboard feature.  References must then be changed to the MEDLINE format so that Refworks can import the information into the correct fields.  Follow the steps below:

  1. Save articles to clipboard using the Send To: Clipboard feature
  2. When completed, open the clipboard then select Send To: then File
  3. Change Format to MEDLINE
  4. Save to your harddrive as a .txt file

Use Refworks to import the .txt file containing the MEDLINE format of the references.

  1. Log in to RefWorks.
  2. Select References, then Import
  3. Use Import Filter/Data Source labeled NLM PubMed
  4. Browse to the location you saved your .txt file and open it (under "Import Data from the following Text File").
  5. Click the Import button at the bottom of the screen.
  6. Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.
