Annotated Bibliography for English Studies: ABES
Library has: 2001 to present
ABES covers secondary literature in English Studies in the widest
possible sense. Four main subject areas are identified: Language and
Linguistics, Cultural Studies, Literary Studies, and Film Studies.
Every year, thousands of books and articles are added to the wealth of
publications already available in English Studies. The goal is to
present users with selective bibliographies that address their specific
requirements and refer only to relevant material of the highest
quality. ABES is available to current faculty, staff and students at
the University of Waterloo. ID and password are NOT required - just

Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature: ABELL
Library has: 1920 to 2000
ABELL is an annual bibliography from the Modern Humanities Research
Association (London, UK.). Published in book form since 1920, this is a
useful index to scholarship on English language and literature. This
bibliography complements the coverage provided by the more
comprehensive MLA International Bibliography. ABELL provides direct
links to a wide range of secondary sources in the Literature Online
collection, including articles for more than 120 online journals.
Library has: 1975 to 1998 (Abs AI3.A7x Porter)
Mainly indexes periodicals form the United Kingdom, the United States,
Australia and Canada by author, subject, critic, and cited authors. It
allows users to trace cited references for recent articles published in
some 1,200 scholarly journals for arts and humanities research. It also
provides references to book reviews, theatre reviews, and other
performance reviews for the journals indexed.
Library has: 1921 to present (Abs AI3.C2 Porter)
An index to Canadian periodicals drawn from all disciplines. Indexed by
author and subject, with special headings for book reviews, poems,
moving picture reviews, Canadian drama, and short stories. (Call number
and title of the index may vary.)
Canadian Business & Current Affairs (CBCA)
Library has:
1982 to present; full-text 1992 to present.
Containing over 4 million records, this database provides
excellent coverage for periodical sources on current events, business,
science, the arts, and academic information as produced in Canada. CBCA
Complete combines current and retrospective indexing for more than
1,600 titles with direct access (from 1985 to present) to full-text
articles for more than 540 of the periodicals and daily news sources
covered. CBCA provides ongoing full-text coverage for at least 350
general to specialized journals and magazines for research in the
humanities, social sciences, and science.
ERIC: Educational Resources Information Center
Library has: 1966 to present
ERIC database is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education to
provide extensive access to educational-related literature. ERIC
provides access to some 14,000 documents and over 20,000 journal
articles per year. In addition, ERIC provides coverage of conferences,
meetings, government documents, theses, dissertations, reports,
audiovisual media, bibliographies, directories, books and monographs.
Because of the broad-based focus on "education and related topics",
this is an excellent guide to current publications relevant to
Rhetoric, Professional Writing and Composition Studies. ERIC is one of
a group of databases available through CSA.
Library has: 1984 to present
Humanities Full Text contains abstracting and indexing coverage for 400
periodicals, as well as the full text of over 96 periodicals. The
disciplines covered include: literature and language, history,
philosophy, archaeology, classical studies, folklore, gender studies,
performing arts, history, religion and theology. Humanities Index
provides complete indexing for all journals covered, including
citations to book reviews, performance reviews, poems, plays and short
stories. Full text coverage begins in January 1995.
Library has: 1974/75 to present (Abs AI3.I62x Porter)
This index contains citations for articles and book reviews from over
350 periodicals in the fields of archaeology and classical studies,
area studies, folklore, history, language and literature, performing
arts, philosophy, religion and theology. It also provides references to
theatre reviews and other performance reviews for the journal indexes.
Library has: 1994 (AI3.I586x Porter Controlled Access. Inquire at the 1st Floor Circulation Desk)
A computerized index to 190 early Canadian magazines, whose contents
deal mainly with cultural, intellectual and literary concerns. Each
entry identifies a particular magazine item (article, poem, story,
illustration, editorial), which is described in a standard
bibliographical citation format (author, title, source). In addition,
entries also provide notation on genre, general subject and first-line
(for poetry).
Linguistics & Language Behavior Abstracts
Library has: 1973 to present
This database covers all aspects of the study of language, including:
phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. A useful index
to recent publications in Applied Linguistics, Discourse Analysis/Text
Linguistics, and Interpersonal Behavior and Communication. Complete
coverage is also given to various fields of linguistics, including:
descriptive, historical, comparative, theoretical and geographical.
Linguistics & Language Behavior Abstracts is one of a group of
databases available through CSA.
Library has: 1987 (Ref P87.M29x Porter)
Lists tables of contents for 15 of the leading journals in
communications studies, from first issue through 1985. A classified
subject index is included at the back of the volume.
Library has: 1921 to 1980 (Abs PN1.M6x Porter)
The most comprehensive index for the literature student. Each annual
edition includes a subject index as a separate volume. This refers
users from specific heading into numbered entries in the Classified
Listings-Author Index . (Title and selected coverage for the annual
bibliography from the Modern Language Association vary from 1921-1980.)
MLA International Bibliography
Library has: 1926 to present
Produced by the Modern Language Association of America, MLA
International Bibliography includes citations to research literature in
more than 4,400 scholarly journals, monographic series, books,
collections of essays and dissertations in the fields of modern
languages and literature, linguistics and folklore. MLA International
Bibliography on-line is equivalent to the print MLA International
Bibliography. This is a very comprehensive index to scholarly
publications for the student of literature.
Science Fiction and Fantasy Research Database
Library has: 1878 to present
Developed by Hal W. Hall (Librarian, Texas A&M University), this
keyword-searchable website provides more than 51,000 citations to
articles, books, news reports, obituaries, motion picture reviews and
other material about the genres, Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror.
Indexing both scholarly and fan writings, it covers all aspects of
these genres.
Library has: 1975 to present (Arts & Humanities Citation Index); 1956 to present (Social Science Citation Index)
Web of Science, in spite of its name, is a collection of indexes to the
literature of the Arts and Humanities, the Social Sciences, as well as
the sciences. It is based on the citation indexes from ISI Web of
Knowledge, which collectively indexes more than 8,400 high quality,
peer-reviewed journals cover-to-cover, providing users with complete
bibliographic data, full-length author abstracts, and cited references
from a wide range of influential journals. Using Web of Science, you
can search by topic, author, source title and/or author address within
its citation databases. New records are added weekly.
Library has: 1980-1996 (UW Library Network. Available at workstations in all Libraries)
Based, in part, on detailed bibliographies published annually in
Shakespeare Quarterly. This database, published by Cambridge University
Press, in association with The Folger Shakespeare Library, provides a
wealth of information for Shakespeare studies. This electronic resource
provides annotated entries for all important books, articles, book
reviews, dissertations, theatrical productions, reviews of productions,
audiovisual materials, electronic media, and other scholarly and
popular materials related to Shakespeare published or produced since
1900.
