Welcome to Arts 140: Extractive Industries and Canada. Your librarian for this class is Tom Harding (see contact info at right). Please get in touch with him if you have any questions related to library resources or research strategies.
To begin your research, keep in mind these resources:
Omni is the name for the University of Waterloo Library's catalogue. Most of the items we own you will find here, including books, journals, articles, theses, images, and films. This is the best place to start your search.
Databases are collections of information the library subscribes to from outside companies. These contain all sorts of information, but are mostly useful for finding articles. Choose a database that matches your subject area.
For this course, your professor would like you to use the 7th edition of the American Psychological Association (APA 7) citation style. APA is often used in the social sciences, business, nursing, and professional programs. Becoming familiar with it will help you format your papers appropriately and help you understand the structure of research papers and reference lists in these fields.
APA 7 is the most recent edition, released in October 2019. This edition contains many updates that make it more useful for you and your professors. Changes have been made to how papers are formatted and how sources are cited so when you are looking for resources to help you create APA citations, make sure the resource is for the 7th edition, as there are still many resources that refer to the 6th edition (APA 6).
Here are a few resources that can help you format your paper and citations in APA 7:
APA quick guide – American Psychological Association
This is a two-page PDF that gives you a quick overview of how to format a citation for a book, journal article, and a chapter in an edited book.

This website provides clear instructions on how to format a paper in APA style and create citations for many different types of resources.
APA Style (7th Edition) – Online Learning Object Repository
This online learning module offers integrated lessons on formatting, style, in-text citation, and reference list citation in APA Style (7th Edition).
Citation / Style Guides: American Psychological Association (APA)
This page provides links to various resources to help you learn more about how to learn APA. Please note that some of these resources are for APA 6 and are therefore not the most up-to-date. Look for resources that use APA 7.
