GIS Subject Guide: GIS Software

This Subject Guide provides you with many of the GIS resources you need to get started as well as continue using GIS in your coursework.

Accessing ArcGIS

Students and employees of the University of Waterloo are free to use ESRI software for teaching, learning, and research purposes. The Geospatial Centre has 4 workstations available for students and staff to use ArcGIS and other GIS software. 

 

If you are interested in using ArcGIS on your personal computer, below is a guide on how to install it through the University of Waterloo:

  • Sign in to the UWaterloo ArcGIS Online Organization using your WATIAM userid@uwaterloo.ca and your WATIAM password.
  • Click the profile icon at the top right of the screen.
  • Click "My Settings"
  • Click "Licenses" on the left side of the screen.
  • Scroll down and click the "Download" button beside "ArcGIS Pro".

To access ArcGIS Online, follow the instructions below:

  • Sign in to the UWaterloo ArcGIS Online Organization using your WATIAM userid@uwaterloo.ca and your WATIAM password.
  • Signing in for the first time may take you to a personal profile page. Click "Home" to go to the main page of the UWaterloo ArcGIS Online Organization.
