Searching and Browsing

The pathways for searching and browsing in ARTstor look like this:

Search tips

  • Use quotes quotes ("...") for exact phrases
  • Use the asterisk (*) for alternate endings
  • Captilization and varying punctuation will not affect search results
  • Order of search terms doesn't effect results

Browsing Basics

You can browse ARTstor images by Geography, Classification, or Collection:

Geography

All images in ARTstor have been assigned standard Geographic terms according to a controlled list of country names based on the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names.

  • For site specific work (architecture, murals, public monuments), the country term is applied based on the LOCATION of the work.
  • For objects in repositories, country terms were applied based on the nationality of the creator.
  • In complex cases, both were assigned.

Classification

ARTstor images are subdivided into sixteen broad classifications:

Collection

Browsing by Collection allows you to view all the collections in ARTstor. Each collection is subdivided by categories based on the content of the collection.
