ARTstor Workshop: Permitted Uses

This section outlines the permitted uses of ARTstor images as well as uses that are prohibited.

ARTstor is a restricted database of images licensed to non-profit institutions for non-commercial educational and scholarly use. The collections include contributions from museums, photographers, libraries, scholars, photo archives, and artists and artists' estates.

ARTstor acknowledges the complex intellectual property rights issues that arise in their project to aggregate and distribute art images. Their aim is to  balance the interests of intellectual property owners with the value of making images available for educational and scholarly purposes.

Permitted Uses - Print

Include printouts of ARTstor images in:

• Class Assignments
• Term papers
• Handouts
• Portfolios

Include a copyright statement along with the printed image. Copyright belongs to the owning institution, as documented in the image metadata.

Permitted Uses - Electronic

Include downloads of ARTstor images in:

• Course Websites
  •  must be restricted to students and faculty
• A website can include the URL for an image.
  •  use the "Generate Image URL" option under the Share menu.
• Presentation, Display, Performance
  • classes
  • lectures
  • seminars
  • conferences
  • exhibits
  • workshops

Offline presentations are possible with the Offline Image Viewer or PowerPoint.

Members in the audience need not be affiliated with the University. However, the purpose of the presentation must be educational or scholarly and non-commercial.

Print handouts (accompanied by the copyright statement) are permitted for the audience of a scholarly or educational presentation, lecture, seminar, or similar activity.

Prohibited

• All commercial or for-profit use (including displays, performances, reproductions, and distributions)
• Posting to unrestricted websites
• Reproducing content in a publication unless expressly permitted by the content provider or covered under the Images for Academic Publishing initiative.
• Making any adaptation or modification of, or any derivative work from ARTstor content 

You must obtain permission from the copyright holder before you can legally include an image in any work that you publish, even with an academic publisher. 

Some of the ARTstor image providers are attempting to facilitate the process and alleviate costs through participation the Images for Academic Publishing (IAP) program.

Users agreeing to the AIP terms & conditions can download publication quality images free of charge.

IAP currently offers 6,400 from The Metropolitan Museum of Art and 3,900 images from the Mellink Archive (Bryn Mawr College). The metadata for these images include the term "AIP" and can be included as a search term.
