The Chatham Planet succeeded the Chatham Journal as a weekly and was first called the Western Planet.  In 1856, a tri-weekly began known as the Chatham Tri-weekly Planet. Then in 1891, it became a daily. It merged with the News in 1922.

In 1854, the office and plant of the Kent Advertiser were destroyed by fire. It was succeeded by the Western Argus.
