Bibliometric Measures in Citation-Tracking Databases: Scopus altmetric data

Finding Altmetric data in Scopus

If available for a publication, altmetric data for publications indexed in Scopus is visible at the article-level from "View all metrics".

The 'View all metrics' button allows the Scopus user to see additional metrics-related information.

Advantages and limitations of Altmetric data

Known advantages of altmetric data include the ability to:

  • Capture elements of societal impact.

  • Complement traditional metrics.

  • Offer speed and discoverability.

Known limitations of altmetric data include:

  • The altmetric data available in Scopus is naturally limited to the publications indexed in Scopus.

  • Altmetrics is a still-evolving field and therefore currently lacks a standard definition.

  • Almetrics are time-dependent.

  • Altmetric data is not normalized and has known tracking issues.

PlumX Metrics

If available for an article, Scopus captures a variety of altmetrics using PlumX Metrics. For a full listing of each altmetric, see PlumX Metrics: The Five Categories

Some articles in Scopus have the option to use PlumX Metrics.

  • Usage: These metrics capture information about the number of clicks, downloads, or views a document has received from different sources such as EBSCO abstract views.
  • Captures: These metrics capture information about whether someone wants to revisit a document by tracking things like bookmarks, favorites, etc. from different sources.
  • Mentions: These metrics capture information about how a document has been mentioned outside of scholarly communication, including blog posts, comments, reviews, Wikipedia references, etc.
  • Social Media: These metrics capture information about how a document has been referenced in social media platforms through shares, likes, comments, tweets, etc.
  • Citations: These metrics capture traditional citations from other items in Scopus as well as citations from sources like Clinical or Policy Citations.
