Patents

Definition

A patent is an exclusive right granted by a government for an invention, such as a product or a process, for a limited time period. To obtain a patent the inventor must prove that their invention is:

  • novel
  • non-obvious
  • performs a useful function

A patent provides enough detail so that a person having ordinary skill in the art understands how the invention is made or used.

Patents are a source of unique information; they provide information that you will not find in other literature.
