Accessing the Hathi Trust Digital Library

In response to library closures due to COVID-19, HathiTrust has made over 745,000 in-copyright book and journal volumes from the University of Waterloo’s print collection available online for our students, faculty and staff. The new service provides remote access to 34% of our print collection.  Under this new program, which respects Canadian copyright law, any print book held in the University Library’s collection that is also contained in the HathiTrust Digital Library can be accessed by faculty, staff and students for full-text, online reading.

Access to in-copyright materials is temporary. This access is provided through HathiTrust's Emergency Temporary Access Service(ETAS), a service that is only available while the Library’s print collection is not available for circulation or consultation due to the current COVID-19 situation.

How can I access HathiTrust digital materials?

Waterloo students, faculty and staff can login to the HathiTrust website by:

  1. Clicking the yellow login button
  2. Find and select “University of Waterloo” in the list of partner institutions
  3. Login with your Waterloo e-mail and password
    1. Drop the @uwaterloo.ca from your username in order to login!

Once you have logged in, you will be able to search and use the HathiTrust Digital Library. Remember that works in the public domain can be downloaded, while in-copyright materials made available through ETAS can only be read online. ETAS materials will be labelled Temporary Access in your search results.
